FAQ Pensions
Letter to the pensioners
8 February 2010
Whilst we were gathered in the main building on 17 December last year, CERN Council was deciding on the future of our pensions. Nothing happened, except for an additional delaying tactic surrounded by an official silence. Having noted the decision by the Member States to remove from the Pension Fund Governing Board (PFGB) the discussions about restoring the financial health of our Pension Fund, the newly-elected Staff Council has unanimously decided that the President of the Staff Association should resign from his position in the PFGB. Our President is thus free from his duty of discretion and can now fully defend the rights of all the beneficiaries of our Fund.

No, this is not the title of the latest horror film to appear on our screens, only a reflection of the very tense situation in which we find our two social mainstays: the health insurance scheme and pension fund.
If both are in deficit today, this is not due to a lack of timely warning. For several years, the Member States have been asked to make decisions. However, with the exception of a few small measures, they continually delay the moment when they will truly have to face up to their obligations.
